Location & Nearby Attractions

St. Leonard’s-on-sea and Hastings offers many interesting places to see and visit. With three miles of unspoilt beaches, and picturesque sandstone hills just inland, it is the perfect backdrop to a civilisation rich in history and elegance.

Old Town Hastings

The Old Town of Hastings is full of things to do. From the amusements on the sea front to the smugglers cave on the hills there is plenty for the family to do. You can get great food at a pub or restaurant or just get fish and chips and sit on the beach, take a tour of the aquarium or Lifeboat station. You’ll never get bored in Hastings old town.

Alexandra Park

Wonderful varied park. Great for the whole family from toddlers to grandparents. With formal gardens, two fishing lake and a swannery.

Hastings Fishermen's Museum

The Hastings Fishermen’s Museum is one of the town’s most popular tourist attractions. It is open every day, except Christmas Day, and over 140,000 people go through the doors every year. It is inside a church built on the Stade in 1852, which fell out of use after the Second World War.

Hastings Castle

A few steps from the apartment up the steepest funicular railway in Britain on the West Hill, are the remains of Hastings Castle, dating back to 1066 as William-the-Conqueror’s first English castle.

East Hill Cliff Railway

The UK’s steepest funicular railway is not only a structure of national importance but also a source of immense local pride.

The East Hill Lift provides access to Hastings Country Park which overlooks the Old Town and Rock-a-Nore. It was in the country park that Hastings resident John Logie Baird, the inventor of television, got the inspiration which led to his first TV experiments.

The lift provides views over the Stade, home to the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe.

Battle Abbey

On this spot in the year 1066, the armies of King Harold and William the Conqueror clashed at the Battle of Hastings.

Now you can stand on the very site where this decisive struggle was fought and England’s future decided.

Explore abbey ruins and meet the Normans and Saxons on our sculpture trail. Enjoy the gatehouse exhibition revealing the abbey’s role in the country’s future, then head to the roof for stunning views of the battlefield. Allow the stories of battle to unfold and discover its atmosphere for yourself.
