History

St. Leonard’s-on-sea and Hastings

St. Leonard’s-on-sea and Hastings, best known for its link to the 1066 Battle of Hastings, offers many interesting places to see and visit. With three miles of unspoilt beaches, and picturesque sandstone hills just inland, it is the perfect backdrop to a civilisation rich in history and elegance.

The Old Town in Hastings (close to the apartment), with its medieval half-timber houses, leads to England’s largest beach-based fishing fleet where you can find the high black net shop buildings unique to Hastings.

Heading inland and up the steepest funicular railway in Britain on the West Hill, are the remains of Hastings Castle, dating back to 1066 as William-the-Conqueror’s first English castle.

About Us

Moray Apartments

My name is Oliver Davey and I’m the owner/operator of Moray Beachside Apartments. I established my first apartment in 2011 in Hastings with the aim of providing a comfortable seaside home away from home where one can let the sounds of the ocean wash away the troubles of the big city life.

Since then I have expanded to the lovely seaside town of Suffolk offering 4 more apartments.

Charity

We support a charity each year and sometimes for multiple years.

This year and for 2020 we are supporting Macmillan Cancer support, take a look at what Macmillan do through the link here https://www.macmillan.org.uk/about-us/what-we-do

Macmillan is close to my heart as owner of our holiday lets as they supported my family at various stages and I really believe in their cause.

If you feel able please donate using our green collection tin in the apartment that would be great, we also try to keep a selection of books for you to read during your stay – if you want to keep reading after your stay please do take a book and give us a donation to our supported charity.

Artwork

Artist Featured in Hastings

We like to change are the artists we display on the walls in our apartment.

Currently you see John O’Carroll in all rooms, you can see more of his work here https://circlecontemporary.co.uk/john-ocarroll/

John and I have worked together on several exhibitions together and I also collect his work.

John O’Carroll was born in Cornwall, and became a student at Cornwall College of Art. Among his influences at that time were Roy WALKER, Brian INGHAM and Tony O’MALLEY. Much of his adult life has been spent working and exhibiting in America, Mexico and the Netherlands. He spent 23 years as an archaeological illustrator in the Dakhla Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert. The experience fed his imagination, affecting his spatial and visual awareness. Here he began collecting pigments from the desert in order to make his own paints, and developed his own version of an ancient art technique which combines layers of natural pigments with layers of wax and these are some of the works you can see in this apartment today.

In 2005 he returned to Cornwall but divides his time between the UK and Egypt, where he is a trustee on the Dakhleh Oasis Project. O’Carroll is currently resident artist at Circle Contemporary at Hawksfield on the A39 near Padstow and Wadebridge.

O’Carroll’s work combines modern and natural materials, and makes reference to ancient lost worlds.
